Q: How to install latest XBMC on Debian?
A: Just run “apt-get install xbmc”
Well, it actually installs “XBMC from Debian” and to get the 12.3 you also have to enable backports on Wheezy, but I guess you can forgive me for those nuances. 🙂
Many thanks to the Debian Multimedia team, Modestas Vainius and Ron Lee who kindly backported XBMC’s dependencies and also many thanks to the XBMC Developers for XBMC itself!
The package is well tested on amd64, i386 and armhf, and it is now built on powerpc and armel, too. If you would like to see your favorite architecture running XBMC, please check the build logs and submit a patch fixing the build to the BTS.
Happy hacking!
update: XBMC 13 Gotham replaced Frodo in Debian, but you can still install it from snapshot.debian.org. For details see the post about Gotham.
Awesome, thanks! I’ll upgrade my xbmc as soon as I get back home. 😀
btw, https links of your blog post are missing a ” : “
Thanks, I have fixed the links.
Thanks a lot for your work! Surely XBMC takes quite a bit of effort. I’m a very happy user of XBMC. The old package on wheezy, though. Excited to see your work soon!
How does one enable the backports on wheezy?
Based on http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/:
1. Add this line
deb http://http.debian.net/debian wheezy-backports main
to your
/etc/apt/sources.list
(or add a new file with the “.list” extension to/etc/apt/sources.list.d/
)2. Run
apt-get update
.3. You can now install xbmc by running:
apt-get -t wheezy-backports install xbmc
Awsome thanks I did everything put “apt-get -t wheezy-backports install xbmc” I’ll give that ago now.

Apologies as I am new to Linux, but I have been getting the following when installing xbmc:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
xbmc : Depends: xbmc-bin (>= 2:12.3+dfsg1-3~bpo70+2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: xbmc-bin (< 2:12.3+dfsg1-3~bpo70+2.1~) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: python-imaging but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
Any idea?
It looks like you are trying to install xbmc….deb manually. Dpkg does not resolve dependencies, thus you either have to use apt-get to install xbmc’s dependencies automatically as described above or download the missing .deb files and install each of them manually with dpkg.
I suggest using the former method.
